ABOUT
Hi. I'm Wendy. I arrived in NYC in 2000, bright eyed and bushy tailed, attending NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. After dancing my heart out in college for 3 years, I was kicked out the door with a BFA in dance, and no real skills for "life." But that didn't matter. I was surely going to get a company job, just like I was trained to do in college. Spoiler alert: I didn't get a company job. Instead, I learned how 95% of dancers dance in NYC: "freelance." I got kicked around a lot. But over the years I figured it out. 18 years later, I'm tougher, wiser, stronger, and smarter than ever.
Between catering gigs, hundreds of audition cuts, becoming a self-employed personal trainer, several major injuries, dancing with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and Mark Morris Dance Group, I found myself still missing something. One thing led to another until last year I earned my certification as a Life Coach, knowing I could bring exactly the kind of support I was craving into the dance world.
Being A Dancer grew out of my need for emotional support in dealing our brutal industry. Every dancer I know has a team of trusted body workers who will “put them back together:” Yoga instructors, acupuncturists, massage therapists, physical therapists. But when it comes to the emotional strain of the industry, we’re left hanging. It’s taboo to discuss emotional struggles. We may bitch post-audition cut at a bar with our girlfriends. We may be offered space in the arms of a teacher at the end of class to cry about how hard it is recovering from a sprained ankle. But I’ve never had a sustainable way to manage these issues, and just how deeply they affect me. So that's exactly what I'm offering you: a space to discuss and manage and take action on the challenges we face. Let's start talking about it. And better yet, let's DO something about it.
